Ignition coils, coil packs, rail coils are now quite common on most modern vehicles instead of the old style distributors to generate the spark for the spark plug. The coil pack can come as a block type coil that connects to the spark plugs with ignition or HT leads. Pencil coil packs sit directly on top of the spark plug replacing the need for ignition leads. Rail coils sit across the top of the spark plugs and are a full unit rather than individual coils. Coil packs generate the voltage that the spark plug uses to ignite the fuel in the combustion chamber, and when broken can cause excessive mis-firing and running issues.
